Richard Gere pleads for Nobel winner

Richard Gere outside the United Nations in New York read a statement from Chinese dissident and 2010 Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo, who is currently jailed in China on charges of subversion

  1. I have always like Richard Gere for his support of the Dalai Lama. I like him even more now that he speaks on behalf of Xiaobo Liu. We should never forget him, and we should try to feel how dreadful it must be to be in a prison cell, especially in China. I can only imagine how he is treated. I truly hope he is not tortured. He is a human being after all and I know that even he will break under China’s brutal prison system. If this does not keep China’s leaders awake at night – putting such a man in prison – then they are no better than the worst criminals in the world. Truly, China’s party and political leaders are a disgrace to the civilzed world. The only reason they act this way is because they have already done so many horrible things that there is no turning back now. It is beyond the point of no return, so their view is, “We can’t stop now”. They know the full consequences of giving in just a little. It would mean a break in their autocratic damn which would only grow as the Chinese people themselves learn of their country’s horrible truths. Then, the Chinese would demand revenge against the party, and the leaders of China, whoever they are, will pay the ulitmate price. I think it is clear to everyone that this is why they act the way they do – it is simply to avoid accountability on all of their misdeeds, the list of which is so long and nauseating, that few people would believe it if they saw it all spelled out. To me, this is real explanation for why they act this way, and it will only get worse and more bizarre as time goes on.
